Copper Park

Copper Park

Chestnut Hill, MA

The new owners of this house recognized the potential in its quiet location, unusual lot and period detail. The design team’s task was to preserves and enhance the home’s character while re-thinking some of the choices made during previous additions.

A new garage adds a guest suite and glass-enclosed breezeway with a new mudroom, laundry and powder room. Second floor rooms were shuffled and expanded to host more appropriate bedrooms for the family of four, and first floor renovations created a connected kitchen, breakfast, family room and media room arrangement. The formal dining and living room occupy the front entry area of the house. In between, a wood paneled gallery leads to the back patio and conceals a foyer closet and a second powder room.

The home’s main stair was redone in steel and brass, an elegant winding form that connects the three floors. Other details include arched doorways, a dutch front door with leaded glass, bubble-glass pocket doors and generous use of molding and paneling.

On the exterior, the shingle pattern was preserved and repeated in added areas, the roof deck was enclosed to extend the master suite, and work was done to better balance the various additions into a more classical composition. The landscape work preserved the large street facing lawn, enlarged the driveway, expanded and improved the patio areas and added a new collection of plantings.
